Jose Manuel Cantera Fonseca is a senior applied research engineer with expertise in the areas of open standards and platforms, software architecture, semantic web, mobile devices, the IoT and blockchain. He has been involved in different R&D projects intended to apply emerging technologies to solve new societal challenges. He started being a pioneer in the mobile web, where he developed declarative languages for adaptive UIs and context-awareness and a new web-based mobile OS, FirefoxOS. Then, he transitioned to the IoT where he has been one of the key architects of the FIWARE platform that brings the IoT to Smart Cities via linked data and harmonized APIs, enabling portable context-aware applications. Lastly he has technically led the IOTA Foundation efforts concerning value chain ecosystems (supply chains, international trade, circularity), combining blockchain, decentralized identity and dataspaces to devise new decentralized architectures. Along these milestones Jose has made significant contributions to W3C (several Mobile Web APIs, Ontologies, …), ETSI (NGSI-LD standard), GS1 (EPCIS 2.0 standard) and UN/CEFACT (UNECE Web Vocabulary and UNVTD).
